Wintergreen

Be careful not to confuse with periwinkle or black hellebore. Wintergreen leaves always have smooth edges and a fresh winter mint smell when the leaf is broken. Their leaves are generally more ovate (or egg-shaped) than the narrow periwinkle leaves. Wintergreen also tends to grow in more natural habitat than periwinkle or black hellebore which grow closer to human habitation, though wintergreen can survive quite well close to developed areas as well.
